Iterated function systems in the modelling of natural phenomena

Huw Jones

(Middlesex University)

IFSs (Iterated Function Systems) were popularised by Michael Barnsley, who used them to generate images of organic forms showing high degrees of self similarity, such as the Spleenwort Fern. The seminar outlines the main concepts of IFS image generation and shows how structures within a three dimensional environment can be illustrated. Examples include still and animated images of trees and clouds which have genuine three dimensional characteristics and can be animated.
