There is More to (Machine) Vision than Meets the Eye

Bruce G Batchelor

(University of Cardiff)

Machine Vision is finding numerous applications in a wide variety of industries and it is essential for a Vision Engineer to become involved with the design of mechanical handling devices for parts and / or materials, lighting, optics, image sensors (cameras), analogue and digital electronics, software, algorithms, Artificial Intelligence, QA (Quality Assurance) techniques, ergonomics of the human-computer interface and industrial engineering. The speaker maintains that Machine Vision is an area of Systems Engineering, and hence has a distinct identity from Computer Vision, just as it has form human and animal vision. A wide variety of applications of Machine Vision will be discussed and outline solutions demonstrated using an image processing system devised by the author and his colleagues.
