From Airline Reservations to Sonic the Hedgehog: A History of the Software Industry

Martin Campbell-Kelly

(University of Warwick)

This seminar presents a model of the international software industry based on historical principles. The shaping of the industry is described in terms of the interplay of technological, economic, and cultural forces.

The business history of the software industry sheds lights on such issues as: the reasons for the U.S. dominance of the industry; the failure of the pre-existing software firms to compete with Microsoft; and the role played by formal methods and software engineering.
